Ten Needles
Nearly a decade after Mitch Albom chronicled his visits to an old college professor who fought the good fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease, a 13-year old New Brunswick boy has bestowed a gift similar to the heart-rendering tale of Morrie Schwartz.
“Ten Needles” allows us a glimpse inside the world of Sean Collins as he spends his final months battling cancer while sharing rare insight into the human spirit with author/expert inspirational speaker Martin Latulippe.
At a time when it would have been so easy for Sean to become bitter, he instead demonstrates wisdom beyond his years and in his final days offers a way to navigate life’s complexities with simple truths that can be lived each day.
No one got paid for the writing, editing, translating or promoting “Ten Needles”. All the profits went toward helping sick kids - just as Sean asked.
After all, this was a boy who had to endure an average of 10 needles daily while at the same time suffering from a phobia about them.
Sean Collins is a messenger. The kind of kid who wanted to make a difference before he eventually left us on July 9, 2007.
Since the book release party on November 8th 2007, more than 15000 copies has been sold around the world and Sean's mission has helped raises more than $130 000 for cancer patients.
p.s. “Tuesdays with Morrie” (written with the sole intent of paying Schwartz’s medical bills) was turned down by many of the most prestigious publishers in the country. Doubleday finally agreed to publish it with an initial print run of just 25,000 copies. Today, the book has sold more than 12 million copies in more than 50 editions around the globe.
